Black and White with Color

Like many photographers, I like the look of black and white photography, but I also like an updated twist on the black and white photo. For a more dramatic effect, try a black and white photo with one color added. (See the photo below)

This effect is simple to do. Open the photo is Photoshop. Then use the Select Color Range function. This is found under Select, Color Range. You use the eye dropper to select your color range. Then you can use the quick mask function to refine my selection. After you have the selection that you like, you copy that to a new layer.

Now convert the photo to black and white. I like the new black and white layer function found in Photoshop CS3. This layer needs to be between the original photo and the copy of the color range selection that you created. So the layer stack should be the original photo, then the black and white layer and top layer is your color section. You should now have a black and white photo with one color.

The Photographer’s Right

What rights do you have as a photographer?  Can you take photographs of a bridge, building or other public places?  Can security guards confiscate your camera or film?   Do you need a consent form to post a photo of a person on your web site?  These are questions that are on the minds of many photographers.

This week “The Digital Photography Show”, posted a pod cast of an interview with Bert Krages.

Mr. Krages is an attorney recognized nationally, as an advocate of the right to take photographs in public places.  In the interview Mr. Krages address many of the legal issues that photographers face.

The interview was very informative, but if you don’t have an hour to listen to the interview there is a simple solution.  Mr. Krages had created The Photographer’s Right, Your Rights and Remedies When Stopped or Confronted for Photography”.  This is a free PDF download that covers many of the points addressed in the interview.

The “The Photographer’s Right” is something you might even want to carry in your camera bag.
